9th annual joint consultative meeting of the PSC of the African Union and the PSC of the European Union

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) and the Political and Security Committee of the European Union (EU) ambassadors will hold their 9th joint consultative meeting on 25 October 2016. The formal meeting will be preceded by an informal joint retreat on 24 October.

During the retreat, ambassadors will discuss counter-terrorism, radicalisation and violent extremism as well as migration.

The formal meeting will be held in the premises of the Council of the EU, the Justus Lipsius building, starting at 9.30. It will be co-chaired by Walter Stevens, Permanent Chair of the EU PSC, and Catherine Muigai Mwangi (Kenya), Chairperson of the AU PSC for the month of October 2016

In the morning, ambassadors will review crisis situations and threats to peace and stability. Over lunch, they will discuss how to enhance EU-AU cooperation on peace and security issues. The afternoon session will focus on support to AU peace and security activities.

Maritime security will be briefly touched upon under any other business.

A joint communiqué will be issued at the end of the meeting.

EU PSC is comprised of ambassadors from each EU member state. Representatives of the European Commission and of the European External Action Service will also be present.

The AU PSC is comprised of ambassadors from 15 African Union member states. Its composition is renewed every two years. Since March 2016, the AU PSC includes ambassadors from Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Chad, Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. Representatives of the Commission of the African Union will also attend.
