The Government of Japan has been providing funds to local non-profit organizations through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) since 1989.

The Handing Over Ceremony of a GGP project “The Project for Water Supply in Karadolo West” was held at Ukwala District, Siaya County. The Grant Contract of this project was signed on 13th of March 2015.

The project received a grant amounting to USD 86,343 (approx. Kshs 7.1 Million) for the 6.5km piping coming from Mauna Dam, construction of 5 water kiosks, 3 toilet blocks, and a water tank to improve the access to water within the community.

At the ceremony, Mr. Yoshihiro Katayama, Minister Counsellor of Embassy of Japan congratulated the organization for the successful completion of the project. He explained that the Government of Japan has a Country Assistance Policy for the Republic of Kenya which identifies five priority areas as Environmental Conservation, Agricultural Development, Health and Medical Care, Human Resource Development, and Development of Economic Infrastructure. Among the five sectors, he pointed out that three of them- environment, agriculture and health- are basically related to water and emphasized the importance of water.

He also reminded that it is now the community’s responsibility as the direct beneficiaries of this project, to ensure the maintenance of the pipelines and the facilities with the support by the local authorities. He hoped that the water supply would last for several decades.

He wished the people good health, great happiness and prosperity.
